Fiberglass vs. Vinyl Pools: Cost, Maintenance and Durability

Fiberglass vs. Vinyl Pools: Cost, Maintenance and Durability

Fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools are two popular choices for Ontario homeowners planning an inground pool. Both can create an attractive, functional backyard, but they differ significantly in construction, customization, maintenance and long-term costs.

Earthworks installs fiberglass pools, so that is naturally where our experience is strongest. However, fiberglass is not automatically the right choice for every property. This guide explains the practical differences so you can decide which option better suits your backyard, budget and priorities.

The complete project cost will also depend on excavation, access, equipment, patio size, retaining walls, fencing and landscaping—not just the type of pool.

How Fiberglass Pools Are Built

A fiberglass pool is manufactured as a complete shell and delivered to the property in one piece. The shell is lifted into a prepared excavation, levelled, connected to the plumbing system and carefully backfilled as the pool fills with water.

Fiberglass pools are available in predetermined shapes and sizes. Modern designs can include:

  • Entry steps
  • Bench seating
  • Tanning ledges
  • Shallow lounging areas
  • Rectangular or freeform layouts
  • Different depths and interior colours

The finished surface is smooth and non-porous, making it relatively easy to clean and maintain.

How Vinyl-Liner Pools Are Built

A vinyl-liner pool is constructed on-site using wall panels supported by a concrete or prepared base. A flexible vinyl liner is then fitted over the structure to create the pool’s waterproof interior surface.

Because the structure is built at the property, vinyl pools provide more flexibility in shape, size and depth. This can be useful when a homeowner wants a highly customized pool or when a standard fiberglass model does not suit the available space.

The liner is comfortable underfoot but is also a replaceable component that can fade, wrinkle, puncture or deteriorate over time.

Which Pool Costs Less?

Vinyl-liner pools often have a lower initial price than comparable fiberglass pools. However, the pool shell or structure is only one part of the overall investment.

A complete pool budget may include:

  • Design and permits
  • Excavation and soil removal
  • Crane or specialized access
  • Plumbing and electrical work
  • Pool equipment
  • Coping and patio
  • Grading and drainage
  • Fencing
  • Retaining walls
  • Landscaping and lighting

Vinyl owners must also budget for future liner replacement. The timing varies depending on liner quality, water chemistry, sunlight, use and maintenance.

Fiberglass pools may require a larger upfront investment, but they avoid routine liner-replacement costs. The better financial choice depends on how long you expect to own the pool and whether initial price or long-term maintenance matters more to you.

Maintenance Differences

Both pool types require regular water testing, circulation, filtration and seasonal care. Neither option is maintenance-free.

Fiberglass-pool maintenance

The smooth fiberglass surface gives algae fewer places to attach than a rougher or more porous surface. Routine maintenance generally includes:

  • Testing and balancing the water
  • Cleaning the waterline
  • Emptying baskets
  • Maintaining the filter
  • Checking the salt or sanitizing system
  • Opening and winterizing the pool properly

Maintaining correct water chemistry remains important because unbalanced water can affect the finish and pool equipment.

Vinyl-pool maintenance

Vinyl liners are also relatively smooth, but owners must take additional care to protect the liner.

Potential concerns include:

  • Punctures from sharp objects
  • Damage from improper cleaning tools
  • Fading caused by sunlight or poor chemical handling
  • Wrinkles or movement
  • Leaks around fittings
  • Eventual liner replacement

Chemicals should be properly diluted and distributed according to product instructions rather than allowed to sit directly against the liner.

Durability and Repairs

Fiberglass shells are designed as permanent pool structures. With proper installation, drainage and maintenance, they can provide many years of use without needing a replaceable interior liner.

Fiberglass is durable, but it is not indestructible. Surface damage, improper installation or significant ground movement may require specialized repair.

A vinyl pool’s supporting structure can also last for many years, but the liner is considered a wear item. Liner life varies, although replacement is generally expected during the pool’s service life.

Small vinyl punctures can sometimes be patched. More extensive damage, severe fading, persistent leaks or an aging liner may require complete replacement.

When comparing warranties, read the details carefully. A long warranty term does not necessarily mean every type of damage, labour cost or replacement expense is fully covered.

Design and Customization

Vinyl pools provide the most flexibility when the project requires a custom shape, unusual depth or dimensions that do not correspond with a manufactured shell.

Fiberglass pools are limited to the models offered by each manufacturer. However, the range of available designs has expanded considerably, and many include popular features such as benches, steps and tanning ledges.

Remember that the pool shape is only one part of the backyard design. A standard fiberglass pool can still become a highly customized outdoor space through:

  • Interlock and coping selections
  • Patio layout
  • Retaining walls and steps
  • Landscape lighting
  • Garden beds
  • Water features
  • Pavilions and shade structures
  • Outdoor kitchens and entertaining areas

The surrounding landscape often has as much influence on the finished backyard as the pool shell itself.

Installation and Property Access

A fiberglass pool arrives in one piece, so the property must have a workable delivery and lifting plan. Depending on the site, a crane may be required to position the shell in the excavation.

Access considerations include:

  • Space beside the house
  • Overhead wires
  • Mature trees
  • Neighbouring properties
  • Septic systems and wells
  • Existing fences and structures
  • Crane positioning
  • Municipal restrictions

A vinyl-liner pool is assembled on-site, which may make delivery easier on some restricted properties. It still requires access for excavation equipment, material removal and construction.

The entire project schedule for either pool type will depend on permits, site conditions, weather, patio construction and landscaping. The time required to place the shell should not be confused with the timeline for completing the full backyard.

Which Pool Is Better for Ontario?

Ontario’s seasonal climate makes proper installation, drainage and winterization essential for both pool types.

A fiberglass pool may be the better fit if you want:

  • A smooth, durable interior surface
  • Lower routine maintenance
  • No scheduled liner replacement
  • A manufacturer-designed pool model
  • A pool integrated with a complete landscape project

A vinyl-liner pool may be worth considering if you want:

  • A lower initial pool cost
  • Greater freedom in shape, size or depth
  • A soft interior surface
  • A customized design that is unavailable in fiberglass
  • Easier delivery to a property with difficult access

The contractor’s installation practices are just as important as the material you choose. Excavation, base preparation, plumbing, backfilling, drainage and surrounding patio construction all affect how the finished pool performs.

Choosing the Right Pool for Your Backyard

Start by comparing complete project proposals rather than the price of the pool alone. Ask what is included, what is excluded and which site conditions could change the final cost.

Earthworks Landscaping & Pools installs fiberglass pools and coordinates them with interlock, grading, retaining walls and surrounding landscaping. By planning the pool and backyard together, we can help create a finished outdoor space rather than treating the pool as a separate feature.
